I recently had the opportunity to meet Deb Prior. Deb Prior owns Liberty Tax Service in Manchester CT. I got to interview Deb and she shared some interesting things about Refund Anticipation Loans.
Q: Is there a group of people more likely to apply for a Refund Anticipation Loan?
A: Early filers are the most likely to take a Refund Anticipation Loan, I estimate 90% of early filers will request a loan.
Q: Is it easy to get a Refund Anticipation Loan?
A: Banks offering the refund anticipation loans are stricter this year than past years. I feel that Liberty Tax Service has a competitive advantage this year with a good lending partner for our Refund Anticipation Loans. After our conversation I found an article that one of her major competitors has lost the ability to offer Refund Anticipation Loans this year.
Q: Is there technology coming that may reduce the need for a Refund Anticipation Loan?
A: The IRS is testing a new service this year called Modernized e-File that is approving returns in as little as 6 hours. This means eligible and approved filers are able to get refunds more quickly. I feel that the quick approval process may eliminate the need for many filers to get a Refund Anticipation Loan.
During our conversation Deb mentioned two promotions Liberty Tax Service in Manchester is running this year. Early Filers, those who file their completed return by February 15th receive $50 in instant cash. There are also several discount programs offered through national and local employers.
